Burnet High School
Shattered Dreams

On Wednesday, March 11th and Thursday, March 12th Burnet High School Juniors and Seniors will be participating in a program titled Shattered Dreams.
Shattered Dreams is a two-day, school based program that promotes responsible decision-making among high school students regarding underage drinking and impaired driving (driving under the influence of a substance) by showing them how irresponsible choices can end all dreams.  The program was developed by the Bexar County DWI Task Force Advisory Board on Underage Drinking in 1998 as an expansion of the “Every 15 Minutes” program introduced in Chico, California.
Shattered Dreams was the response to a community need to prevent injury and death resulting from underage drinking and impaired driving crashes.  Join the Journey is Burnet’s community response to underage drug and alcohol use in Burnet County and the Shattered Dreams program being presented by BHS is an extension of their mission.  If this program saves one life, it has been a success.
Wednesday morning Juniors and Seniors will be released from class to observe a mock accident scene here on campus. Local law enforcement and emergency response personnel will be on campus to simulate a major accident with numerous injuries and fatalities. The students involved have already been notified and are preparing for the simulation. The accident simulation should take approximately 45 minutes to an hour of class time. Following the simulation, a student will be removed from class every 15 minutes to emphasize the deaths that occur each day in impaired driving accidents. These students have also been informed and are preparing for the event. While no Freshmen or Sophomores are directly involved in the program, they will experience some impact due to students being removed from classes and the corresponding announcements.
Thursday morning Juniors and Seniors will again be released from class to attend a mock memorial service to recognize the devastating impact that is caused by impaired driving. This service will resemble a typical funeral. Several parents will speak and a video of the previous day’s simulation will be shown. Counselors will be on hand to assist any student in need.
Any student who does not wish to participate in observing the crash scene or attending the memorial service will be allowed to stay in the Library until all students return to class.
Picture Proofs! Freshmen, Sophomores & Juniors..
Picture proofs from Clear memories will be handed out in your Social Studies class on Wednesday and Thursday of this week. Orders are due back WEDNESDAY, MARCH 4TH. Please return the proof sheets whether or not you place an order.
